Come What May: Kant and the Future of Practical Reason (under review)
My book reassesses Kant’s moral theory by showing how providential faith sustains the exercise of practical judgment and the pursuit of the highest good. It challenges criticisms—from Schiller and Hegel to contemporary virtue ethicists—that Kantian ethics is insufficiently responsive to human vulnerability and changing circumstances. I argue that Kant’s ethics and theology give rise to an ethical subjectivity prepared for the uncertainties of practical life and not easily discouraged by them.
The Practical Sublime (provisional title) (in progress)
My second book project asks how moral judgment and commitment remain possible in response to challenges (from climate change to the unforeseen repercussions of technological development) whose global scale and temporal reach exceed our capacities for comprehension and judgment. The project develops from my reading of Kant’s theory of the highest good in dialogue with his theory of the sublime.
